On June 24, 2026, Paychex reported fiscal 2026 revenue of $6.5 billion, up 17%, the first full year after it closed its Paycor acquisition on April 14, 2025. Its annual report puts the customer base at about 840,000 as of May 31, 2026, with roughly 800,000 payroll clients, and says the company pays 1 in 11 U.S. private sector workers.
Those 800,000 clients are mostly small and mid-size employers, and they cluster in a handful of industries. If you sell software, benefits, insurance, finance or HR services, knowing which kinds of companies run Paychex tells you where your next accounts are. Span’s Paychex users list tracks 213,512 companies and 1,847,764 contacts (figures on the page as of October 2026). Below are the ten company types that show up most, with a real Paychex client for each.

Average yearly cost of time spent on HR tasks, from Paychex’s own industry surveys. This cost is the pain that makes these businesses outsource payroll.
This is Paychex’s core market. Its 10-K points to more than 6 million employer firms in its target markets, and it runs two products aimed at them: SurePayroll for owners who want to do it themselves online, and Paychex Flex for small and mid-size firms that want more support.
Two client stories on paychex.com (live as of October 2026) show the pattern. Interior Plant Scapes, with 10 to 49 staff, used to track hours by hand before it moved to Paychex for onboarding and compliance. Rebel Media, a media company with fewer than ten people, joined the Paychex PEO so it could offer benefits that compete with larger employers.
Many of these owners also run QuickBooks or a similar ledger, which makes the SMB accounting software users list a useful overlap when you want firms that already outsource back office work.
Hunger Thirst Group runs seven restaurants in St. Petersburg, Florida. According to its Paychex client story, the group saved $120,000 a year after switching, cut payroll processing from three days to eight hours per pay period, and onboarded every employee in five days. It uses HR Pro, Flock benefits administration, screening and a 401(k).
Paychex’s own 2025 hospitality survey explains the demand. Restaurant and hospitality businesses spend an average of $140,479 a year on HR tasks, 31% of leaders spend ten or more hours a week on HR admin, and 59% planned to outsource HR administration within the year. Hotels share the same problems, and the hotel industry email list covers that side of hospitality.
Franchisees run many small payrolls under one owner, and each store adds locations, tax accounts and turnover. Paychex lists franchise channels as a sales route in its 10-K.
Phoenix Franchise Brands, the Detroit company behind Spray Foam Genie, Door Renew, Furry Land Mobile Dog Grooming and Fetch! Pet Care, left a PEO it found overpriced and moved to Paychex for HR services, enterprise payroll and time tracking. The client story counts more than 100 core employees and 500 more across franchisees. A North Carolina sub shop franchisee, Tommy Stuckey, says DIY payroll took him three to four hours a day before he moved his five stores and 150 plus staff onto Paychex Flex Pro.
Multi-unit owners make buying decisions themselves, so reach them through a CEO email list filtered to franchise and food service.
Paychex’s 2025 Priorities for Healthcare Leaders survey found that 56% of healthcare leaders planned to outsource HR administration, 40% spend ten or more hours a week on it, and replacing one employee costs an average of $14,737. Clinics also juggle contract staff on 1099s and shifts that run around the clock.
Podiatry Care of Maine is the named example. Its office manager says the practice resisted a payroll company for years because it was small, then saw faster processing and fewer payday worries after it switched. Pinnacle Healthcare Systems, with 10 to 49 staff, runs on the Paychex PEO.
Practice managers and owner physicians are the buyers here. Span’s physician email list and dentists email list cover the two largest groups of private practices.
Senior living gets its own page on paychex.com, and the reason is staffing. Communities run 24 hours a day, compete hard for caregivers and face OSHA and state rules in every location.
Discovery Senior Living, a Paychex PEO client, adds communities through acquisition. Its HR leader says that when a new community joins, staff have to be enrolled in payroll, benefits and the 401(k) quickly so residents see the same faces. That makes acquisitions a buying signal worth tracking.
To reach operators directly, start with the nursing homes email list.
Contractors pay a mix of W-2 crews and 1099 subcontractors, carry heavy workers’ comp exposure and often wait on invoices before payroll is due. Paychex sells all three fixes to this group: 1099 payments, workers’ comp, and invoice factoring with advances of up to 90% of receivables.
City Wide Facility Solutions manages full-time staff plus hundreds of contractors. Its president credits Paychex with simplifying worker classification and taking admin stress off the owner.
Span’s contractors email list reaches owners, and the construction software users list finds firms already paying for job management tools.
Paychex’s 2026 Priorities for Retail Leaders survey puts the average yearly cost of HR time for a retail business at $256,437. It also found that 28% of retail leaders spend more than ten hours a week on HR paperwork, and that losing one employee costs $13,141.
Retailers buy Paychex for multi-location payroll, scheduling that feeds hours straight into pay, and help hiring seasonal staff. Paychex now pairs that with a POS and payments product, so a retailer on Paychex may be consolidating vendors.
For retailers on a specific store system, the Epicor Retail users list is one technographic filter that works well.
Woodburn Nursery & Azaleas grew to 275 employees and runs Paychex time and attendance with the Iris time clock plus Paychex retirement services. Its HR manager says time tracking becomes critical at that size.
Manufacturers have the same need. Paychex’s manufacturing page focuses on complex shift patterns, safety compliance and attrition, and pitches time clocks, safety programs and benefits as the answer.
Plants that track time on a separate system are a cross-sell or displacement target. Compare the manufacturing industries email list against the Kronos users list, and use the agriculture industry email list for growers and nurseries.
WXXI Public Media is the nonprofit on Paychex’s industry page. Its CEO, Norm Silverstein, says keeping up with changing IRS rules is a top concern and that outsourcing the back office lets the station spend on its mission.
Better Together Supports, a support services organization with 250 or more staff, uses Paychex HR professionals for PTO and sick leave rules. Nonprofits often have one person covering HR and finance, so the buyer is usually the executive director or finance director.
The HR executives mailing list reaches the larger nonprofits that have a dedicated HR role.
Accountants are both Paychex clients and one of its main sales channels. The 10-K says more than half of new payroll clients come from referral sources, and it names CPAs and its AICPA partnership among them.
Specialized Accounting Services, a CPA firm with 50 to 249 staff, runs its own payroll and time tracking on Paychex Flex and uses it for clients too. Corona & Corona TKS, a small Oregon tax practice, refers clients to Paychex so it can focus on tax strategy. Outside accounting, Easy Speech Therapy moved off paper processes to Paychex because, in its CEO’s words, paper made it hard to scale.
If your product serves the accountant who recommends payroll, the CPA email list gets you to the referrer. If it serves the finance lead who approves the spend, use the CFO email list and read Span’s rules for selling to the CFO first.
A firm’s payroll provider is a technographic fact, and technographics data lets you filter by it before you write a single email. A few practical moves:
Paychex reported payroll client retention of 82% to 83% in fiscal 2026, so roughly one in six clients leaves each year. Accounts in their first year, accounts that just acquired a location, and accounts that crossed 50 employees are the ones most likely to be reviewing vendors.
A company on Paychex looks different from one on ADP or Paycom. Span’s ADP Payroll users list and Paycom customers list let you build side by side segments, and the companies using ADP post covers the bigger employers on that platform.
If you already hold the accounts but not the payroll field, tech install appending adds it, and the payroll email list reaches the payroll managers who run the system day to day.

Mostly small and mid-size employers. Paychex says it serves about 800,000 payroll clients, with SurePayroll and Paychex Flex for smaller firms and Paycor for larger businesses with more complex needs.
Paychex lists restaurants and hospitality, professional services, healthcare, skilled trades, retail, senior living, manufacturing and nonprofits on its industries page. Franchise operators and accounting firms are large groups too, through its franchise and CPA referral channels.
About 840,000 customers as of May 31, 2026, per the fiscal 2026 annual report. That includes about 800,000 payroll clients and more than 130,000 retirement plan customers.
Yes, more so since Paychex bought Paycor in April 2025. Paycor is now the platform Paychex uses for larger businesses. Enterprises with thousands of staff still lean toward Workday, SAP and Oracle, which Span compares in its guide to identifying companies by HR software.
